About
Teabowls
Unlike 2000 degree glass, pottery is made with
your hands directly on the clay. With molton
glass, this is not possible. This is one of the things
I like so much about working with clay. I love being
able to shape and reshape pieces at a pace and
comfort level much different than with glass. Clay is
also a much more enjoyable material to work with when it comes to trimming or tooling. This is anything from touching up the work to totally reshaping a piece. After the piece is formed, there is much more flexability in changing the texture or finish, adding marks or taking marks away. With glass, these things are done with a grinding wheel, sandblaster, or with acid.
With clay, it is done with hands and very simple hand tools that make it a much more intimate process. I use as many techniques as I possible can with
all of my materials, including clay. Different pieces are formed on the wheel,
hand formed with different methods, or a combination of both. I fire pieces
in different types of kilns, wood, gas, electric, barrels, pit firing, and with any technique or material that will add interest to the process or to the
piece (or hopefully to both). As with all my work, I do not make, or try to
make, two pieces alike. Each piece is totally unique in all respects. I do not
mix glazes in large quantity, as I want to make glazes specifically for each
piece, and some pieces use little or no glaze, with effects coming from the
firing methods and materials used. All of the work shown in this current selection were each glazed and fired multiple times in an electric kiln.
