Freeforms
I find that these freeform shapes best capture the feeling of fluidity of
molton glass. Their shapes are formed by spinning the glass out into a large disc, then turning it over while it is still soft so that folds, undulations, and ridges are created as gravity drops and pulls the outer edges down. This is done in the few seconds where the glass drops in temperature enough to 'freeze' the motion of the glass, and this feeling of frozen motion is, to me, one of the attractions of these forms. Even though a good deal of control can be exerted in different ways, there is a great deal of chance and variation in the final form. Usually my most intricate work is in these pieces. Many have body colors that change under different light, and design work and imagery that adds to the 'flow' of the body. All of these elements are enhanced by the body's movement and flow.
